Today, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes one of only two band survivors still alive from the historic 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Artimus Pyle.
Pyle recently told the story as part of the 2020 film Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash, and joined us from his home in North Carolina.
In part one of our feature, Artimus tells the gripping story featured in the movie, describing the plane crash and his heroic rescue mission; he was the sole crash survivor to crawl from the wreckage to get help, and he details the incredible tale for us.
Tomorrow we’ll hear more about the crash, including the immediate aftermath and ways the band felt abandoned by their management and record label. We’ll also get some fun memories about Skynyrd’s 1977 visit to Hawai‘i, and post the complete 90 minute interview, and a couple of other Lynyrd Skynyrd interviews Dave has done over the years.
